On April 27, 2020, Governor Abbott issued an Executive Order which initiated a phased, statewide plan for reopening business and public services in Texas beginning on May 1, 2020, including libraries. McAllen Public Library re-opened its doors today, May 1 with modified services and limiting the number of patrons in the building.
McAllen Public Library staff and patrons are required to wear a personal face mask in the library. Stacks will be browsable and the computer lab and printing services will be available. Hours of operation for the public will be Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Main Library and Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Lark and Palm View branches.
“The McAllen Public Library extends a warm welcome back to our patrons. We will continue to serve our patrons while practicing social distancing, which slows the spread of the COVID-19 virus,” says Director Kate Horan.
Patrons will see floor visuals that measure 6 feet to help maintain social distancing. Furniture has been rearranged to maintain social distancing and play spaces remain closed. Plexiglass sneeze guards are currently being deployed at service points. Hand sanitizer will be provided throughout our facilities and high touch-points will be frequently disinfected throughout the day.
The Library’s public access computers and printing will be available with fixed social distancing between computer users. Visitors can print tax return forms and may use dedicated computers to access the 2020 Census and My Texas Benefits.
Contactless curbside delivery service, which began in late March at the Main location, has grown in popularity and will continue for patrons who want to pick up their arrived holds. Curbside will continue to be offered Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
McAllen Public Library will continue offering virtual library programming for children, teens, and adults, and a wide variety of e-books, e-audiobooks, and streaming movies. Regularly scheduled Live Storytimes can be viewed on Facebook – MPL Kids and virtual activities continue on MPL Teens and MPL Adults.
