What motivated you to start this business?
We identified that our mini marranitos and conchas were unique in the market. We saw how our product was quickly accepted by the community because of that uniqueness. This is what motivated us to start a family business.
What is the history of your business?
We grew up in a family where bakery was the source of income. Our paternal grandmother taught all her children about bread and that is how my father learned the bakery trade. Our family migrated to the United States and my dad started making cookies from home to generate extra income. My brother Arvin is a Veteran who served in Afghanistan with the National Guard and has been involved in real estate and other trades, I studied education and became a teacher. My brother and I saw the potential for a bakery business as this is something that’s in our blood. We are now the third generation dedicating ourselves to the bakery trade, innovating and adapting new ideas.
What product/special services do you offer?
We sell a variety of miniature version Mexican cookies, among them we have the typical cookies or Mexican bread, the brown sugar pig, the “hojarascas” powdered bread, the walnut polvorones with icing sugar “wedding cookies”, marranitos with chocolate chips, protein marranitos, empanadas with caramel filling and our popular miniature conchitas.
What makes your business product/service standout from the rest?
We are the first bakery in the Rio Grande Valley to start distribution and direct sale of mini marranitos, they have been very popular as they carry traditional flavor, are made with 100% natural piloncillo and do not have additional preservatives. Another of our most popular products is the personalized conchas. These products have set us apart from other bakeries.
As a small business owner, what does business means to you?
Our family business is very significant and of great value to us. My brother and I followed in the same footsteps as our paternal grandparents and my parents. Business to us also means being able to provide our community with traditional products that transcend generations.
Are you involved in any initiatives that give back to the community? If so, please elaborate.
It is one of our objectives to be able to get more involved with the community and provide them with the same support they have given us. One of our goals is to create and promote the first CONCHA FEST in McAllen so that people can enjoy sweet bread, especially the traditional Concha.
