What motivated you to start this business?
Joseph and I have been dog owners for over 20 years. We have lived in big cities and we have never been able to find a dog grooming center that satisfies our standards and expectations. When my dad’s health began declining, my husband supported my decision to move back to the Rio Grande Valley where I was born and raised. I wanted to give back to the community that I love so much and knew I was going to be back. So, Joseph and I sat down to brainstorm and realized we wanted to open up a small business. My husband is a 25-year veteran of the Marine Corps. I have been in the education world for over 25+ years. We researched and found this amazing franchise that included education and wellness as a huge component in the dog’s care. We both knew we wanted to open a dog grooming business to provide high quality care with a wellness component at an affordable price to our RGV family for their pet’s care.
What is the history of your business?
Well Groomed Pets was created with the health and mental wellness of dogs in mind. The founder’s dog passed away from cancer and he thought how to be proactive with the wellness of one’s pet. This is why he created a dog grooming franchise that is focused on the dog’s wellness. The American Kennel Club recognizes that the health and safety of pets when outside of their human family’s care remains a genuine concern, and we applaud Well Groomed’s commitment to third party certification of their grooming facilitates and professionals.
What product/special services do you offer?
Grooming services for dogs. Our salon is an AKC SAFE Certified Salon, and all staff is AKC SAFE Certified, and are exclusively trained by the AKC themselves as well as Celebrity Groomers. All staff are Fear Free Certified Professionals and Red Cross Dog first aid certified. Rest assure that your pet is in the best hands.
What makes your business product/service standout from the rest?
Well Groomed Pets developed a proprietary pet wellness focused tech engine guided by a world renown veterinarian. This Artificially Intelligent system tracks the pet’s health. If there is a lump found on the pet, it is measured, and documented into the system. The system will keep track of the lump and the pet owner is notified. We work collaboratively with the pet parent and veterinarian to report any abnormal findings. No other grooming business does this for the pet and at no extra cost. The pet is assessed every time they come to get pampered at our grooming salon.
We also offer 10% discount off a full grooming experience or a free upgrade to a Deluxe grooming package to all City of McAllen Employees, McAllen Chamber of Commerce Members, Military Veterans, first responders, teachers, and Winter Texans. We also extend a 20% discount to all customers 65+ years of age.

As a small business owner, what does business mean to you?
Being a small business owner is the most important thing my husband and I have been a part of because we love dogs and believe dogs deserve the best care at an affordable price. Being a small business owner is also an accountability to serve the public (nuestra RGV familia) with the best care and grooming services for our extended family: our dogs.
Are you involved in any initiatives that give back to the community? If so, please elaborate.
Joseph is an Ambassador for the McAllen Chamber of Commerce. We both teach Catholic marriage retreats under Lydia Pesina, Diocese of Brownsville Family Life Director. I also teach CCD Classes at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Harlingen, Texas.
We have a partnership with the RGV Human Society to provide a 25% discount on our Full-Service Grooming for all pets adopted at the RGVHS. We would love to partner with other small businesses to raise awareness for the health and wellness of all animals, but we are mostly focused on dogs.
