Proposed FY 2024-2025 $652 million budget also includes infrastructure, economic development and quality of life projects

McAllen City Manager Roel “Roy” Rodriguez, P.E. once again recommended to Mayor Javier Villalobos and the McAllen City Commissioners a significant decrease in the property tax rate for McAllen taxpayers, as part of the proposed $652 million municipal budget for fiscal year 2024-2025.  The proposed recommendation lowers the property tax rate from $0.457285 per $100 valuation to $0.449989 per $100 valuation. This will be the third consecutive year that the City of McAllen City Commission has lowered the property tax rate.

“This decrease in the McAllen property tax rate is important for our taxpayers because it will provide continued relief as residents are still facing rising costs,” said Rodriguez. “This further emphasizes to our taxpayers that we are always looking out for them.”

“McAllen already has one of the lowest property tax rates in the Rio Grande Valley and that is because of our strong fiscal responsibility and management of how we grow and develop city projects, programs, services and infrastructure.  It is also testament to the strength of our economy that allows us to recommend a decrease in the property tax rate,”  Rodriguez concluded.

Mayor Villalobos expressed his pleasure at the recommendations included in the budget, especially, that it included a property tax decrease for taxpayers.

“I was confident that the City of McAllen management team would put a solid plan together,  that would not only prioritize public safety and capital improvement projects, and advance quality of life and economic investment, but also  would include a lowered property tax rate, providing relief for taxpayers,” said Mayor Villalobos.

The recommendation was made as part of the presentation at the first of six planned budget workshops that will take place throughout the month of August.  Manager Rodriguez laid out the financial and strategic planning for the City of McAllen.  Other highlights from the proposed FY 2024-2025 budget include over $253 million in capital infrastructure improvements that include infrastructure and development projects, including funding for construction of the Quinta Mazaláan Center for Urban Ecology; sustaining the current municipal workforce; and maintaining the city’s first-class quality of life.  Funding for the expansion of cargo facilities at the Anzalduas Port of Entry, to help the bridge turn into a full commercial international crossing is also in the budget.

The public hearing on the proposed tax rate will be on Monday, September 9, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. at McAllen City Hall, 1300 W. Houston Ave.
