Governor’s Small Business Summit Unveils Pathways to Success

The Governor’s Small Business Summit brought McAllen entrepreneurs together Thursday morning at the DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Hotel.

The sold-out event featured diverse panels, offering actionable insights and strategies to tackle challenges and capitalize on opportunities. The summit was hosted by the Governor’s Economic Development and Tourism Office in collaboration with the Texas Workforce Commission and the McAllen Chamber of Commerce.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott delivered the keynote address where he emphasized the vital role of small businesses in Texas, highlighting the state’s economic achievements and its status as an economic engine where entrepreneurial dreams can thrive.

Workforce Development

The Workforce Development panel unveiled trends and unique characteristics of the Rio Grande Valley’s workforce. Speakers emphasized on the evolution of workplace before and after the pandemic. They also highlighted the youthful workforce of the RGV, stressing the importance of investments in technology and STEM education.

Panel consisted of Lone Star National Bank Senior Vice President & Director of Business Development Julian Alvarez, UTRGV Office of Workforce & Economic Development Associate Vice President Ron Garza and Edible Arrangements Franchise Owner Maurice Welton.

Resources for Minority-Owned Businesses

The Resources for Minority-Owned Businesses Panel emphasized leveraging available resources to propel success. Attendees learned that starting with SBA resource partners, engaging advisors and attending training sessions can greatly aid business growth. The discussion underlined the importance of passion, commitment and customer discovery to ensure business viability.

Panel consisted of Mission Economic Development Corporation Chief Executive Officer Teclo Garcia, UTRGV Director of Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Commercialization Linda Uffland and UTRGV Veterans Business Outreach Center Business Advisor Marcus Villagran.

Access to Finance and Funding

The Access to Finance and Funding Panel delved into securing financial stability. The panel emphasized strategic approaches, highlighting grant programs and the need for comprehensive business plans. Attendees were reminded to be resilient and trust the resources available.

Panel consisted of IBC Bank President & CEO and McAllen Chamber Board Member Adrian Villarreal, PeopleFund Loan Officer Eligio Sanchez and Yucca Street Investments Co-Owner Stephen Sutton.

The summit concluded with Small Business Awards Presentations to Galaxy VR & Game Lounge and Mercado District for their impactful contributions to the business community.
