Ahead of the 2023 legislative session, Texas lawmakers previewed their objectives. Here are five things you need to know.

Texas lawmakers on both sides of the aisle talked about schools, abortion, and guns in advance of next year’s legislative session in a range of panels at The Texas Tribune Festival.

From left: Tribune political correspondent Patrick Svitek moderates a discussion about the 88th legislative session withHouse Republicans Four Price, Dustin Burrows, Ellen Troxclair and Craig Goldman at The Texas Tribune Festival in Austin on Sept. 23, 2022.

Here are five takeaways from the policy panels ahead of the upcoming legislative session.

1. Gov. Greg Abbott’s busing program has drawn attention to the border, but lawmakers say there has been little relief.

House Democrats Rafael Anchía, Mary González, Senfronia Thompson and Chris Turner speak on a panel moderated by Tribune political reporter Zach Despart at The Texas Tribune Festival on Sept. 23, 2022 in Austin, TX.

2. The state’s abortion ban could see clarification.

Republicans expressed a willingness to clarify the abortion ban, with one Senate Republican saying he would support new exceptions.

3. After the Uvalde shooting, gun control reform doesn’t look promising.

“We have decided that there is an age of majority, and that age is 18,” Burrows said.

Democrats have long tried, unsuccessfully, to regulate access to guns.

4. The future of school vouchers remains uncertain.

Critics of school vouchers say these programs defund public schools, while proponents say these efforts give parents more choice.

5. Everyone agrees the grid needs more fixing.

Senate District 10 includes southern Tarrant County.
